Those who have the expertise to reverse engineer the bitstream, would no doubt have little troubles to overcome those "protection" schemes.

Maybe except the Actel devices - at least based on Actel's claims...

None of these newer devices have an external boot ROM, so they don't expose your bitstream to outside observation. Now, I certainly don't know what one COULD do ... maybe it's trivial to steal and reverse engineer them. I doubt it, though.
