Are you pointing out the flash once corrupt (due to causes out of the control of the manufacturer) can not be detected by the part, that is, there is not function performed at RESET that validates the FLASH content using checksum or alternative technique?
The issue is not "can you find out it is bad" the issue is that it goes bad. None of the flash based chips (Philips, SILabs) I use a) lose their memory. b) has a detection mechanism for that. To protect flash some measures (e.g. proper supervisory function - whether on of off chip) must be taken, but the statement re the Dallas chip is "there's no way to ensure" which, for the aforementioned chips there is.
