... because you ignore the existence of Europe. Au contraire, we do not, we insist on gold-plating all the European legislation, to the detriment of our industry and people. The French on the other hand, really know how to ignore the existence of Europe.... PS. I recall reading an article that one of the early Ariane rockets blasted because the french "metric" 1st stage didn't meet well enough the english "imperial" 2nd stage... The early history of Ariane is very interesting, as it is to me, yet another bad example of our government's failure to support our technology base. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Arrow Also see "Blue streak" Also "ELDO". Quote from "WikiPedia" The UK is the only country to have acquired and then abandoned a satellite launch capability. There is nothing magic about working in metric or imperial, it is easy to convert one way or the other. In a practical way, when for example, you are trying to remember how long the piece of wood you measured to fit in the lounge is 4 feet 6 1/2" by the time you get in the workshop than 1384mm. Using binary sub divisions of the principle unit should appeal to computer folks anyway - measures in 1/2 1/4 1/8 1/16 1/32 1/64 are also easy to carry in ones head ! I was brought up in an exclusively metric education system, all my technical work is in SI and yet I still find it easier to use imperial for many things. The units are more human sized. Steve |
