To the best of my knowledge, the BIPM (the International Bureau of Weights and Measures), from where the SI originates, has never said anything about any engineering standards. Metric screw threads are, as far as I know, an invention of the Germans; first defined in a DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm), later adopted by ISO.
