Some capacitors (not all) can survive the polarity reversal as long as the polarity isn't permanently reversed. They fail quickly if they have a reversed DC potential.
then the lower of the two caps on the DC side will go POOOOOOOOOF

that cap, in my opinion, should be enough for everyone to go "WHAT" and look for some other solution.
