Now, it costs about $2E6 just to get the necessary software tools and put people to work attempting to work around all the hostile features in the OS. Bullshit. clearly you've never used your PC/MAC to interface with your hardware target. The PC has become a tool for running Windows app's, and isn't of much use for anything else, these days. And those Windows apps let me: a) Write VHDL code, simulate said code, and implement said code for the FPGA of my choice; b) Write C and assembly code and compile/assemble and provide a debug environment for the microcontroller/microprocessor target of my choice; c) Draw schematics and do PCB layout for my products. d) Host the frame grabber card that captures data from my product. No disagreement there. So, in that respect, I can't do my job without a Windows machine.
It's time to develop a development platform. In the pre-PC days, using one's computer, be it an APPLE-][ or a CP/M box with an 8080 or Z80, was a given. The PC worked in that role for a while, but its day has passed. Uh, that's weapons-grade bullshit, Richard! I would prefer to use OS X-based tools, but since most EDA tools are Windows-only, I don't have much choice. Well, there's LINUX. ISE runs under LINUX. ISTR that Altera offered a LINUX-based version of Quartus. Doesn't that stuff work for you? -a
You're doing what Erik does all the time ... You make a statement, then leave it unsupported. Clearly you're using your Windows machine to run Windows app's. I use my PC's to generate signals, too, not just run the Windows app's. Yes, my logic analyzer can do that too, but it was sure handy to use the PC. RE |
