The extra MCU contributes nothing. Why use it?

If you let 'something' drive the actual diaplay, you can use a MCU to process and stuff incoming stuff into a DPM. An example would be to convert test strings to pixels and stuff them in the appropiate place.

Of course, if "incoming stuff" is already in VGA format, that would be another story, but, in that case, I would be sorprised if there are not cheap ready made solutions.
