Start with the newest Silabs parts, where you can buy the Toolstick Base and daughter card for $10 (TOOLSTICK850-B-SK)

Then, move to the F5xx series, (5V operation) by adding a 2nd daughter card.

If you need std package upgrades, then the Atmel LP51 series are good, but their ADC is not stellar.
The AT89LP52 is very cheap, for non-adc small projects that need 40/44 pins.

The AT89LP51RB2..ID2/ED2 has Boot loader in ROM, and also SPI ISP.

If you already have Macros, then you likely also already have PCBs.
