Triacs can be triggered with current into the gate or out of it. They are known as "four quadrant devices". This means that in the circuit shown in the original posting that the triac can trigger with a pulse either above GND or below GND as long as the absolute value of the pulse amplitude exceeds the threshold level speced for the part. It is also important to remember that the pulse has to be applied with respect to the terminal typically labeled the A1 terminal. In your diagram the A1 terminal should be the one to GND.
