I can't give full details, but at a place where I were a while ago, they had to replace all power supplies because the SCR was too slow. by the time the SCR blew the fuse, the supplied circuits were already blown.
BTW "SCR too slow" was definitely proven

replacing the homegrown regulator (24V bus battery to 5v) with a Power Trends module took care of the problem.

Just guessing: the circuit is good enough for power overvoltage, but not for extreme transients
