I will typically only use this if I have a lot of boards, but only one of them needs to be jumped, as in termination needs for RS-485 to control multiple motors. The idea is that once configured the board will never change
This approach is only reasonable for "very technillay qualified" installers. For a product using jumpers for RS-485 I can't count the number of service calls resulting from some customer not setting the jumpers right when a replacement unit was shipped. It went even wilder when a customer moved units around "for diagnosing" A much better approach is to sort out the devices by using a DS2401 to assign node numbers and a short in a plug to set the termination.
