If you don't like the SiLabs stuff, Maxim's DS89C430/450 can be programmed in-system using nothing more than Hyperterminal!

Maxim claim them as "drop-in" replacements for the old 8051s - they are even available in 40-pin DIP!

You can probably get a couple as free samples from the Maxim website:

They don't have any of the on-chip debug stuff, though.
