That's I2C directly to serial.

Hmmm... that's bit-banging on the RS232 control lines - so there would be no point in doing it on a microcontroller, and it's likely not to work if you try it on a PC COM Port!

Is there USB to I2C with common components?

Certainly not on a PC COM Port!

I think that someone has published an AVR project that does bit-banged USB - but why bother?

Microcontrollers with on-board USB and I2C are now "common components" - so why not just use one?!
