Even if the Triscend were a current product, there wouldn't have been much point in using it for that.
In fact, all of the Triscend's "special features" would probably have been more of a hindrance than a help for such a project.

If you just want to talk to a GSM modem, then any 8051 kit with a serial port will do.

As in this thread, I would recommend one of the SiLabs kits - but definitely get something with on-chip debug.

You can get the SiLabs kits from Farnell.
