You cannot[1] use RS232 as a bus;

You don't actually need RS485; you could just use open-collector drivers and pullups - much like I2C...

(Note: if you've ever bought anything from an automatic vending machine, the chances are that your purchase was controlled by just such an arrangement!)


[1] Well, not without "special tricks" - in which case it's debatable whether it still truly counts as "RS232"...
