If the LED current is also 20mA (like the current through the relay) then the voltage across the relay is clamped to 24V during turning-off of relay. The switching transitor would see a voltage of 2 x 24V = 48V, which could eventually result in enough clamping.

So, Raghunathan, who is also in his business for some years, was quite right with the assumption, that the "non-polarized" LED could eventually provide enough free-wheeling.
