Also, certain LEDs show considerable rise times:

So, if the relay is turned off very fast, the LED couldn't absorb the free-wheeling current fast enough anyway.

But the best argument is given by the datasheet itself: These relays can be ordered with a built-in free wheeling diode, which wouldn't make any sense, if it wasn't needed...

EDIT: As the relay current is only 20mA, there's no need for a 1N4001. A fast 1N4148 would be strong enough.
