a) a bunch of processors trying to cooperate on doing the same. This is the current 'biggie' and (currently?) fraud with problems.
b) what I think is the future of the 8 bit micro; processor 1 processing sensor 1; processor 2 processing sensor 2; processor 3 processing sensor 3 ... and some central processor collecting from all of them and making sense of the whole thing. This configuration looks like a bunch of 'nanos' feeding a micro. I think the 8 bitters have a bright future in the 'nanos'
