#162399 - 1.5GB/minute reasonable for backup to USB2 disk Responding to: ???'s previous message |
A reasonable figure for writes to USB 2.0 disks (unless using very small block sizes) should be maybe 25MB/s, which corresponds to 1.5GB/minute or about 11 hours for 1TB. Individual USB chip will affect this a bit but getting more than 25% lower transfer rates should be a reason for a closer check. Significant fragmentation on one or both of the disks will lower the speed, but not make it grind to a halt.
The best alternative for larger backup to external disk is probably ESATA, with FW800 not far behind since the disk will be the limiting factor. The only Gbit NAS I have tried is the D-Link DNS-313 and in my setup it is way slower than all my USB 2.0 disks, and only meaningful as a remote backup destination in another building for geographical protection from fire or theft. |
