If there were FTDI drivers for DOS, I would have no problem providing a large-enough MCU-local buffer to save the data until the burst ends, but I do need to move the data into the PC before the next burst.

Both LINUX and Windows are hostile to "useful work" at the hardware level, in that they interfere with hardware-software interactions and because they both think they're more important than the hardware processes occurring at the lowest level.
