#153157 - 8052 computer

The one MAJOR hurdle I see with a (lets call it) "loaded program '51 based computer" is that once you have whatever form of an OS you decide to make you will have to start developing a bunch of applications. I doubt very much that there ever will be an "applications development community" for a "loaded program '51 based computer".

True. But that's just a matter of popularity, not a technical challenge. And you never know. There are people still playing with Atari and Commodore computers from the 1980's--many of them inside Windows emulators. I don't know why. They probably enjoy it even though it's not practical. Same with a potential 8052 computer.

In the olden days, when PCs actually cost money, I could see a limited interest in this, but today when no college will see you without a laptop under your arm and a cellphone is more of a 'PC' than a "loaded program '51 based computer" ever will be. the interest will be basically nothing.

Hobby and learning opportunity. It would also be useful in demonstrating that you don't need 2GB of RAM and 1.5GHz to make a useful (for some applications) computer.

YES, it could be intersting as a "hobby project" but it would take an inordinate amount of "hobby time" just to get it out of the gate.

Which is why it hasn't advanced. It still could. Again, as a hobby and for fun. I would obviously never use such a computer instead of my laptop but it'd still be fun to develop.

Now if I could just make a million dollars or so so I could stop working and do "fun stuff" full time. :)

Craig Steiner
