#153155 - Depends
Responding to: ???'s previous message

Karim, yes, it's possible. But as has been said elsewhere in the thread, the 8052 probably isn't the best choice for it.

Quite so - but I think I would go as far as to say that the 8052 probably isn't even a good choice for it...?

Only the original poster can make that decision. He asked if it was possible. It is. Whether it's practical depends on his intentions.

So you could do it just for the intellectual challenge - but it's probably not of any real, practical value.

And a lot of the "intellectual challenge" would probably be in working around the 8051's limitations for such a task...

Indeed. Phillip and I started working on it for fun and the intellectual challenge was most of that fun. There really wasn't much in regards to working around the 8051's limitations. It was a fun opportunity to design an OS from scratch and to decide just how flexible we wanted it to be.

What the heck, here's a link to some documentation of the project we were working on. Phillip got the video working and I got the keyboard/mouse working as well as talking to the SD card and was making progress on the FAT file system. But then we ran out of time. So this link is very preliminary and about three or four years old. Unfortunately, we never really got any further. That's the problem with hobbies--when you run out of time, they're the first to go.

In any case, the project was going to be for fun and as a proof of concept. I now kind of wish we had done it. :)

Regards,
Craig Steiner
