The issue here is, as I have seen so often before; the developer has (for productivity reasons) a behemot of a computer and then releases what run "satisfactory" on his behemot on the unsuspecting users. Exactly. Which is why I like fiddling around with uC's. Learn small scale techniques, apply to large problems. However... Forcing developers to use substandard HW has only so much utility. My situation at work is odd, I admit. I have niether a PC nor a workstation on my desk. I bring my Mac iBook in just because I want to. It's my personal property. The company provides me with a SunRay, which is connected to a very large shared desktop server. That's just a different beast completely. I can distract my neighbors, and get more speed. :-) Non-uC developers have also come to expect year by year performance gains. Since we've kind of hit a thermal barrier, I suspect the last few years have seen code bloat come to the forefront. "Things will be faster 2 years from now when we ship" turned out to be untrue. |
