There are some TV adverts for a "disease" called "restless leg syndrome," and a new drug to treat it. It sounds like bullshit to me, and my wife's theory is that there's some drug whose patent is about to, or already has, expired (thus making it available by others as a cheap generic), so the drug company discovers that the drug is indicated to treat a completely different problem, which means that they can get another few years of full-price, patent-protected prescriptions for the drug. I don't know about the rest of your comments, but while I agree that restless leg syndrome sounds like B.S., it isn't. My brother has had it since he was young but there was never any name assigned to the problem, much less medociation--and it, combined with another sleeping disorder, apparently caused him a lot of grief when he was younger. He hadn't even mentioned it to a doctor because who would think it is actually a medical problem. I don't know if my brother is taking any medication to deal with that, but the syndrome itself is most definitely not B.S. even though it sounds like it. Knowing that, I avoid rushing to judgement on new disorders/syndromes that sound like B.S. but most probably aren't. They're probably very real to the people that suffer it. I am very opposed to the constant flood of drug commercials on TV. On the other hand, I'm not sure my brother would have ever realized he had RLS and that it was actually a recognized problem if it weren't for those commercials. Like I said, he never had mentioned it to a doctor because it just didn't seem like something you'd mention to a doctor. Regards, Craig Steiner |
