As Mr.ERIK had rightly pointed instead of dirctly jumping into design get the basics right.The above pdf will help a lot and if you need books you can purchase one of this books which comes in Indian paperback editions
1)The 8051 Microcontroller and Embedded Systems by Muhammed ALI Mazidi
2)The Microcontroller Idea Book : Circuits, Programs & Applications
by jan axelson
3)The 8051 Microcontroller : Architecture, Programming, and Applications by Kenneth Ayala

This books are cheap and easily available in the market and good too.Go through this along with the bible and you would get a fair enough idea of how to start off or atleast search for.
