I believe the MCU solution would be easier. Since it is a straight multiplier you could easily get by with a simple MCU thing that uses an internal oscillator without having to build the XTAL circuit. The MCU code to do the filtering and the larger dynamic range would be easier than futzing with a CPLD design in my book.
