#181552 - Ambiguity Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Continuous monitoring is an ambiguous term. So lets discuss the options. When I see those words I think that a scope could display a record of the signal. A record is a pre-defined length of samples of the signal. I keep using the scope indefinitely and I have continuous monitoring. This does not mean that the scope itself is not missing parts of the analog signal because itself may not have an infinite repetition rate disregarding sampling theory altogether. Another take on continuously monitoring would be to take a record that never ends. Meaning that you would have an infinite repetition rate and that every sample is accounted. In both cases a sustained data rate is necessary. The real question is how long does the record length need to be, to be considered accurate for the needs of this application? Reducing the record length from every sample accounted to maybe 200 samples (or enough samples to fill up the internal memory) and waiting to transfer the data will allow for a higher frequency. This does mean that you miss parts of the signal because the transfer process takes time, but if your requirements are not met because of an infinite record length maybe a compromise must be made or different technology needs to be used. |
