Per is making a very strong and positive argument here regarding the PC side of things. Even with todays high performance 2.4 -> 3.2 GHz processors there are timee when certain USB or NETWORK things can cause hickups to the system response rate. I often see waits of seconds in the GUI user interface of Windows Vista!! USer programs reading serial port queues can very well also experience hickups like this too.
