Typical relays also require driver circuits to buffer their coils from the MCU pins. (Of course there are specialty relays with very sensitive coils that may be able to be connected to an MCU port pin directly and operate correctly from 5 volts/3.3 volts at a couple of milliamperes. However it is not clear if this is the type of relay that you had in mind.
