'HC165 is a TTL-workalike ... that's what got people to use the family in the first place. True, the input thresholds are different, and the output levels are different, but the tow families "talk" to one another pretty well. Moreover, if pressed, he can use HCT, AHCT, ACT, HCTLS, or some other family, provided, of course, he was clever enough to socket his parts.
