Yes, I know that Erik did just link to a full page of modems.

But AP Charles did specifically target the most expensive alternatives - the Ethernet-capable modems that are twice the price of the RS232 modems at the top of the list and that sounds closest to Eriks (very minimalistically described) requirements.

For one-off, $100-$150 may be an acceptable price for a free-standing modem. For volumes, a module around $50 would be a better alternative. Unless Erik has suddenly decided to run everything in the modem, a $350 "modem" should not be an alternative. And even then, alternatives exists way below $350 that allows application to run in the modem - both for modules and free-standing modems.
