1) Do you get the modem from a cellular provider or e.g. digikey?. Neither! While you probably can get it from the likes of Digikey, you would be far better to get it from a specialist distributor. A specialist distributor will give you far better support (see examples below). 2) If from the cellular provider, how do you get hold of a person that know what you are talking about?. As others have already noted, your regular "consumer" providers are useless for this - they have absolutely no concept whatsoever of any device that isn't a phone! There are specialist providers specifically targetting so-called "M2M" applications - you might get better support from one of them. I have found the support from Jasper Wireless to be particularly good in this respect: http://www.jasperwireless.com/ Failing that, again, a specialist distributor for your module should also be able to help you with network-related issues - particularly regarding local conditions, practices, etc... 3) Any rstrictions for use (FCC etc?). Over here, the module usually comes will all necessary legal approvals - dunno about US, though. Having said that, some service providers do offer test and/or validation facilities. Again, a specialist module distributor will be able to advise you on this. Jasper do require that you submit your device to their validation before they'll let you onto their network in earnest 4) This is a professional app, so "juryrig a cellphone" is NOT of interest. I'm sure you've seen my posts on why phones are not a good idea for such applications... |
