All I see is some strange people who think that the loss of websites where strange people can post bizarre ideas is a huge loss, I rather think its a good thing, having been bought up in a country where freedom of speech is not held in such high esteem as it is in the US I am not used to mad people being allowed to shout whatever their rice crispies tell them and being able to get away with it. Those laws have nothing to do with freedom of speech, or restrictions thereof. They were promulgated at the behest of the "content provider industry" (the MPAA for movies and RIAA for music) as a way to "solve" the "problem" of content piracy. The problems with the bills are described in detail elsewhere, but the telling part of this mess is that people who really understand the technical underpinnings of the Internet went to various legislators and offered to help them explain that, in essence, the Internet really isn't a series of tubes. These experts were rebuffed, and in one case (I can't find the link), a legislator actually said that he didn't need their expert advice. As for Freedom of Speech, I recognize its need and defend it, but at the same time, I reserve the right to get in the face of the God Hates Fags people with everything I have. -a |
