The cheapest GPS modules really are quite cheap. And they almost always have a logic-level serial port. More and more GSM modules has an USB interface that requires much more work. Besides the tiny little fact that the GSM modules are not designed to supply any time. Time, on the other hand, is an integral part of the NMEA standard.
