Do not jump too quick though. 99% of slaves are going to need to have DC to DC converters to be able to make use of that 48V power source. To have any hope of being anywhere near efficient that will have to be a switcher regulator. If you try to use a linear regulator to get a 5V working voltage 89.5% of the sourced power is going to be wasted in heat. Even more if you are working with 3.3V components (93.1%).
