#182726 - Well I debated on replying on this topic
Responding to: ???'s previous message
But because of your post I will give my thoughts. Patents were originally created to make ideas more open and freely so that progress could be made in the large scheme without taking advantage of the original creator and protecting the original creator. In this way, humanity as a whole progresses. Unfortunately, money corrupted on how a patent was originally intended to be used. Big companies, typically involving pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals are the ones that really profit from patents. They hire literally hundreds of phds just to invent patents. For example, like poly-urethane. Then as companies produce this chemical they must pay royalties. Rarely will one see a sole entity making a lot of money off of a patent, because as Michael says:

Michael Karas said:
In the case of patents one must spend money to get filings in place which automatically puts your ideas out as public data on display for everyone to see. Then one must be prepared to mount a vigorous effort to defend your rights under the patent(s). The rights conferred via a patent do little to protect the idea from being stolen unless you see that being done and send the strong arms after the burglars.

Quite frankly, patents are reserved for large companies. Also, an idea is nothing without the actual working model. The first to the working model is generally awarded the patent in a court of law (in the US). You just have to prove that you were the first to the working model.

If an individual came up with an idea, make it into a working model. Commercialize the working model and start making money. You'd make more doing so than the other route. As you're actually making the working model, you'll get a gauge as to what the idea is really worth, as well.
