Indeed - and that's precisely why this particular OP should keep well away from direct mains connection!!

Another idea is to use the Analog Comparator inside the AT89C2051. Ideas for this are presented in the mentioned application notes from NXP.

But those show a microcontroller directly connected to the mains - there is no isolation at all in them!!

I really think it is best not to even show such things to someone who seems highly unlikely to be in a position to appreciate the dangers - certainly not without very clear warnings!

opening the mind of the OP with new posibilites and knowledge.

But that knowledge needs to include the risks!
