In everyday, non-technical speech, that's probably true.

But we're talking here in the specific, technical sense - and it's not uncommon for that to make distinctions that aren't applicable in everyday, non-technical speech!

I guess "speed" and "velocity" would be another example?
Or "weight" and "mass"...
