Kai's question about the MCU type is a very important one. Reason is that there is a possibility that the MCU is unable to accept a direct crystal input.

Another very important question is "What frequency?"

This is important because it is possible that the X1 / X2 pins on some crystal enabled MCUs are not compatible with low frequency crystals such as 32.768KHz types.
