It allows it to integrate with the remaining local hardware very easily, and it masks the sometimes as long as 20-second delays imposed by the silliness of Windows.
Using USB, of course, does require that one have a local FIFO capable of masking that delay, as well, since the FTDI FIFO is only 128 bytes deep on one side, else the whole process falls apart. I've had to provide as much as 512 MB SDRAM, which, thankfully, is cheap these days, as a FIFO in front of the FTDI part. RE |
