You may want to consider the type of lap top you select to use. Unfortunately, "one with a real COM port" no longer seems to be an available option! :-( The IBM T43 laptop entrusted to me by my employer has a large fancy connector on the bottom that can engage with a docking station. As Per says, the trouble with that is it's not portable - neither in the sense of being able to (conveniently) physically move it about, nor in the sense of being able to use it on other PCs I'm also not sure that they are generally available from other suppliers? It would be interesting to query about just what your usage requirement is for a "real COM" port. What is the critical aspect? As I said, I've actually had very few problems with USB adaptors - most of the problems people report seem to be to do with dodgy software that places unwarranted requirements on the port performace... One problem I have seen was with a device that put its serial port to sleep - this was fine with a real COM port, but caused problems with (some) USB adaptors. Another problem is that some (cheap/nasty?) USB adaptors will choose a different COM port number depending on which USB socket you use... I have done many many serial port things now with Windows apps written in C++ and in various flavors of Visual Basic and have had little to no trouble with generic ports versus USB serial cable ports. Me too! As mentioned above, I think most of the problems are due to poorly written applications - not to the USB adaptors themselves... |
