Correct, but I asked if that was what he was trying to do, and my guess is that since that stopped him participatingt in the thread, it might just have been what he was trying.

It's your choice whether to help, of course. That's where your moral judgment becomes relevant. YOU decide whether to participate in what you perceive of his intent.
I will not "choose to help" or not, till I (with reasonable certainty) know whether he is trying to steal or not, so where is the "moral judgment" in asking the question?
