... my point being that "waveform generation" can mean anything; and while any tool already listed (and I bet a dozen more unlisted) will fit, if I am right in guessing what Russ meant - a relatively low speed but fairly complex output - I would reach out for a microcontroller rather than a PC.
And, one advantage of this preference is, that the house is then less full... :-) Indeed! Jan
PS. I am carrying a couple of assorted microcontrollers - including an 8042 - in a pocket of my car for several months now, just because when I left the previous job I took them and then I was lazy to drop them out at home, and I don't really need them at the moment that much... and the back seats are still quite empty... ;-) Which is easier to program? The PC, in the language of your choice, or the 8042? If all you want to do is to drive the four outputs and read the five inputs ... well, I think the PC is much quicker, particularly since you probably will have to have one to program any other MCU anyway, and the PC already has a power supply, etc. Now, if you had a complete EVK, power supply and all, well ... In fact, you can't program the 8042, as it only operates from internal memory, IIRC. The EA pin simply enables verify mode and emulation. It doesn't allow external memory as does the 805x when nEA is tied low. RE |
