... my point being that "waveform generation" can mean anything; and while any tool already listed (and I bet a dozen more unlisted) will fit, if I am right in guessing what Russ meant - a relatively low speed but fairly complex output - I would reach out for a microcontroller rather than a PC.

And, one advantage of this preference is, that the house is then less full... :-)

PS. I am carrying a couple of assorted microcontrollers - including an 8042 - in a pocket of my car for several months now, just because when I left the previous job I took them and then I was lazy to drop them out at home, and I don't really need them at the moment that much... and the back seats are still quite empty... ;-)
