My answer was, to make a pendulum from one string and count its "ticks" while the other burns, then you can measure any time you want - including 45 minutes - repeatedly.

That's brilliant. Reminds me of the myriad of ways you can use a barometer to find out the height of a building (including dropping it off the top of the building and counting the time to impact, and asking the janitor for the height in exchange for a shiny new barometer). :)
