let simply burn the second string from one end from the beginning. At the moment when the first string (being burned from both ends) burns up, you are left with 30 min's worth what remains from the second string. So, simply ignite its other end at this moment (requires to stand by).
Btw., Kai, I like your statistical method very much, even if I think that it still needs a formal proof. Thinking out of the box, that's really clever, although some technicalities might have been involved...
