Reading, writing, and speaking English is not a requisite for graduating from U.S. institutions of learning, even highly respected universities occasionally turn out specimens such as our current President. If he manages to compose an entire sentence, it's unlikely he uses or pronounces, or, for that matter, understands, all the words correctly. I remember, too, reading of a case in which it was reported to our Chief Executive, that three Brazilian lives had been lost in a bridge collapse or some similar sort of event. After solemnly expressing his regret at the enormous loss of life, he was said to have asked one of his aides, "How many is a Brazilian?" RE |
