Yes, should also work. Suppress all ambient light, so that only the IR light is making the image. I guess, you won't see the grey line under IR?

The idea is, that the grey line should reflect more of the white light than the black ribbon background.

Another idea: Could you contaminate the grey line with a fluorescent ink? Then, an UV light source would make the grey line shine bright.
