That has, presumable about 10" of travel, indicated in 1/10000 increments, right?

I know my pre-WW-II Bridgeport was fitted with a 1980's generation XYZ display of that sort. You haven't gone into enough detail about how the digits are driven. How many of the '2803's are there? Do you suppose one 805x drives some digits and the other drives the rest? It could be done like that.

MCU's don't "break" so easily that I wouldn't first suspect a driver. More detail, please.
