I landed the job I'm at about a year ago after being out of work for about 3 months. My job wanted 3 references. As I understand it's customary ask permission/warn the people you use as references that you are listing them and their contact info. I made darn sure that the people I used had nice and pertainant things to say about me and were trustworthy people. Not sure what's it's like in the UK, but if no one has anything nice to say about the guy, maybe they just say nothing to avoid potential legal risks.
